Linda Smith sits on the couch in her apartment. She moved to Ohio a year ago seeking work when she was unable to find any work in Michigan. Linda has been out of work for three years and is being evicted from her apartment in Bowling Green. Linda would be facing homelessness if not for her friend, Lynn, who is letting her stay with her temporarily. Linda started using the BG Christian Food Pantry in February. Linda’s difficulty in finding work comes from the fact the she does not have a college degree and that she is not able to lift anything more than 5 lbs. due to ruptured bursa in her shoulder. When asked about the food pantry she says, “They were really sweet and they didn’t make me feel useless. They said, ‘we’re here to help’ and there was no judgement at all. I was just amazed at how generous they were. I usually go twice a week for bread and sweets, but I can only go to the food pantry once every 90 days for groceries and if it gets shut down now, all I have is some almond milk. It’s not crack addicts on the street, it’s regular people, it’s your neighbors that are living paycheck to paycheck that are going there. It’s people you know who you don’t even think would be going there and using these services.” Linda believes she would be able to cover all her needs if she could earn $800 a month. Linda was married with two sons. She and her husband divorced in 2006. Her husband did not pay alimony or child support and she was forced to dip into her savings to support herself and her sons until everything was depleted. “Being evicted now I feel like I didn’t try hard enough. I know I did and I know I did everything I could, but it’s like it doesn’t matter. I feel like I deserve to be homeless. When I was at the food bank I told the lady I don’t feel like I deserve this stuff.” If Linda can’t find work she may be end up at one of the homeless shelters in Toledo. There are currently no shelters for the homeless in Bowling Green. 6/3/14
