A volunteer at the Bowling Green Christian Food Pantry explains how many of each item a local couple may take. Since the beginning of the recession in 2008 the food pantry has seen increased demand for its service and a decrease in donations. In response to this situation the pantry has been forced to reduce the number of times that a family can return to the food pantry for groceries – from six times a year to four, though breads and sweets are available to them anytime the pantry is open. Each month the pantry serves between 130 and 140 families – or up to 300 people – a third of whom are children. Those who utilize the pantry must be referred by a social services agency and meet certain income requirements. 2/28/2014
